Who is domiciliary care for?

Domiciliary care is for anyone who wishes to stay in the comfort of their own home and receive the care and support they need to lead an independent life. This could be after an operation if you need support with everyday activities like getting out of bed or someone to help manage your medication. A domiciliary carer is there to provide the day-to-day support you need to live life to the full.

Domiciliary care can also benefit family members who are caring for a loved one at home. Providing care can be emotionally and physically challenging. Domiciliary care can provide respite and support for family caregivers. This allows them to take a break and look after their own health and well-being.

What does a domiciliary carer do?

Our domiciliary carers can support you at home in the following ways:

Personal care

Personal care is a broad term used for any task that helps you maintain your personal hygiene and appearance just as you like it. This could include washing, dressing, grooming and toileting or any other part of your personal care routine.

Mobility support

A visiting carer will ensure you regularly mobilise at certain times during the day if mobility is an issue and enables safe movement around the home.

Companionship

Our domiciliary carers understand the importance of companionship and emotional support to maintain a high quality of life. They are there to engage in meaningful conversation, offer encouragement, play games or activities or accompany you on outings into your community.

Convalescence care

If you require support after hospital treatment or an operation, (for example, following a hip replacement) domiciliary carers can provide convalescence care in your own home.

Medications administration and management

Our professional carers are trained in medication management and use an electronic medication system to ensure all medications are managed proactively and effectively. They will also collect prescriptions from the pharmacy.

Meal planning and cooking

Carers will prepare meals where time allows cooking for you. This can ensure you get your meals at regular times during the day. If they do not visit at every mealtime, they will prepare food in advance for you to simply put in a microwave.

Domestic and household support

A carer will help with domestic tasks to ensure you keep on top of your cleaning regime. This could include cleaning all rooms, laundry and vacuuming throughout to keep your house to the standards of cleanliness and tidiness you always have.

How does domiciliary care work?

You will receive a personalised care plan tailored to you. Each plan is bespoke to the individual needs of each client and can easily be adapted to any changing care requirements. For example, if there are changes to your medication, your care plan will be adapted accordingly to ensure that you receive the correct dosage at the right time.

Once the care plan has been created, your domiciliary carers will work with you to support you through your plan. This may involve helping you with activities such as personal care, meal preparation, medication management, and mobility support. Anything that helps you enjoy greater independence and quality of life at home.

Your care plan will be regularly reviewed and any changes to your care requirements will be taken into account to ensure that you receive the support you need. Our domiciliary carers are also trained to monitor your health and well-being to ensure that any changes or concerns are addressed promptly.

The benefits of domiciliary care vs a care home

Unlike a care home, domiciliary care allows you to stay in the comfort of your own home and removes the upheaval of moving to a formal care setting.

Care homes do offer families the peace of mind they require for their loved one’s care, providing a safe and secure environment where medication and all care needs can be met.

However, the residential setting can greatly impact someone’s way of life. Domiciliary care, unlike a care home, does not impact your independence and may allow you to continue living your daily routine how you wish. In a care home setting, you would be given allotted timings for daily meals, bedtimes and which activities you could engage in.

Costs of domiciliary care

The number of hours our carers visit you and the frequency of visits will determine the overall cost of domiciliary care, in addition to the level of care you require. When we conduct our assessment, we will be able to confirm the cost of domiciliary care at home. We then know exactly what is needed so that you have an accurate cost to help with planning and financing the care arrangement.

Once you are receiving our domiciliary care package, we provide ongoing support – not just to the person receiving care but to all the family. We make sure everything is in place and any changes required are responded to efficiently and effectively.
