Celebrating International Women’s Day with Nichola Proctor

March 8 marks International Women’s Day, a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It is also an important moment to recognise the progress that has been made toward gender equality, while continuing to advocate for the change still needed.

To mark the occasion, we’re shining a spotlight on Nichola Proctor, Care Manager and Dementia Champion, whose dedication and leadership make a real difference to the people and communities she supports.

With more than ten years of experience in health and social care, Nichola works closely with clients across the North West, Cheshire, Cumbria and Yorkshire, helping to ensure they receive compassionate, high-quality support.

We caught up with Nichola to learn more about her career journey, her passion for dementia care, and what International Women’s Day means to her.

What first inspired you to start a career in health and social care?

“I am driven by the rewarding feeling of knowing I have made a positive difference in someone’s life. My career has consistently been in community sectors, focusing on empowering change and acting as an advocate. My goal is to support people in living happy and fulfilled lives, adapting my approach to meet their individual needs.”

How did your career progress to becoming a Care Manager and Dementia Champion?

“I was excited to be approached with the opportunity to join a new project. My enthusiasm stems from my enjoyment of being part of a wider team, particularly given my special interest in dementia. I look forward to taking an active role in ensuring the consistent delivery of quality care across the company and exploring how we can best collaborate as a wider team to achieve this.”

Was there a moment in your career when you knew care was the right path for you?

“The moment I entered A Community Day Centre, the joyful smiles of the clients made me feel instantly at home.“

What makes dementia care particularly meaningful to you?

“My personal experience with family and friends living with dementia has highlighted the significant challenges involved. I am motivated to deepen my understanding and acquire the skills necessary to ensure we consistently deliver the highest standard of personalised care.”

What does International Women’s Day mean to you in the context of the care sector?

“To celebrate strength, resilience, to empower each other and continue to uplift others.”

What does great leadership look like in care?

“Supporting and empowering others to maintain high quality standards with compassion and integrity.”

How do you support and motivate carers in your team?

“Maintain a positive outlook, be responsive to concerns and issues, and motivate teams to reach their full potential.”

What achievement in your career are you most proud of?

“My journey to becoming a registered manager, highlighting my resilience during the unprecedented challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

What advice would you give to young women considering a career in care?

“Your voice matters, your wishes are valid, you are limitless. Keep rising, speak your truth, always be yourself and never give up!”

Thank you, Nichola!

Nichola’s journey is a powerful reminder that the heart of social care is built on the strength, compassion, and leadership. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we don’t just look back at what has been achieved; we look forward to the future that people like Nichola are helping to shape, one where every individual is supported to live a happy, fulfilled life.
