The Chance to Recover in your own Home

Planning for an operation later in life can be daunting and there are many after care considerations that need to be made to make your hospital stay and recovery stress free. These can include where you will recover after your operation, how long your recovery will take, and if you have someone who depends on you at home, like a spouse who requires care, who will support them whilst you are in hospital or recovering.

With a number of operations delayed due to the pandemic, hospital beds will be in high demand, with theatres trying to catch up on the time they have missed. Swift and safe discharge will be of high priority and many patients, who do not have the right level of support at home, will most likely either stay in hospital or receive their recovery care at a rehabilitation centre, like a care home.

The majority of us, 97% to be precise, when asked would like to receive care in the comfort of our own home. But still, many people do not know about the option of live-in care, which would allow you to recover in the comfort of your own home.

What is live-in care?

Live-in care is when a professional carer lives in your home with you and provides you with support for 10 to 12 hours a day. They live in your home and can also provide two instances of support through the night.

What does a live-in carer need?

A live-in carer requires their own room to sleep in. They also require access to the internet, so they can complete their daily administrative tasks and they require full board food and drink, which consists of three meals a day. However, as part of their support, they will prepare and cook these meals for you both. A live-in carer will also need a daily break of two hours, during this time you will either be supported by another carer or friend / family member if needed.

If you have an operation on the horizon, it is important to research all your options for post operative care and choose the one that best suits your wishes. It is important to remember that a care home is not your only option and there are other alternatives for you.
