What is overnight care at home?

For many people living with care and support needs, being alone during the nighttime can feel daunting. Whether you require assistance with medication management, personal care, or repositioning in bed, we’re here to provide compassionate care during the night so you feel safe and comfortable.

There are two main types of overnight care

  • Sleeping night care: a carer lives with you and is on hand to help you up to twice during the night.
  • Waking night care: a professional carer is awake during the nighttime hours, so they are on hand to help you whenever you need it.

Who can benefit from overnight care?

Overnight care at home can be used to support you in a variety of situations. If you live with any of the following, you can benefit from the support of an overnight carer:

  • Dementia: if your loved one wakes up multiple times during the night, and has moments of disorientation and confusion, an overnight carer can offer support and reassurance.
  • Incontinence: if your loved one lives with urinary incontinence or an overactive bladder, an overnight carer can support with toileting to reduce trips and falls.
  • Mobility issues: for those with mobility issues, an overnight carer can ensure safe movement around the home at night.

How does overnight home care differ from live-in care?

With overnight home care, a carer will be available during the night to support you whenever you need it.

A live-in carer will live in your home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, on a rotation with another carer. While they provide care throughout the day, they typically provide sleeping night care rather than waking night care.

A dedicated overnight carer will not live within your home. Instead, they will visit you overnight to provide waking night care and go home in the morning.

Why choose The Good Care Group?

With award-winning overnight care, you can maintain your independence and quality of life in the place you love most.

In-house carer training

All of our carers complete a training programme developed by in-house clinicians before being assigned to a placement. Plus, they’ll receive additional enhanced training for complex care needs.

Fully managed service

We are not a care agency. We directly employ, train, and supervise all of our carers. That means you’ll receive consistent, reliable support, from carers we know and trust.

Dementia care experts

Our in-house experts, including Clinical Lead Sabah Shah and Dementia Champion Nichola Proctor, support our care teams to deliver compassionate dementia care at every stage of the condition.

Award-winning care

We’ve won more awards than any other home care provider for our service, training and culture. Including a Home Care Award, and a National Dementia Care Award.

What does our live-in overnight care package include?

Our overnight care service is designed to be highly personalised and tailored to your unique needs. We’ll conduct a free care consultation before care starts, and develop a detailed care plan. This can include various types of support to help you during the night, such as:

  • Expert nurse-led care
  • Complex care
  • Companionship
  • Personal care
  • Planning and cooking meals
  • Medication support and management
  • Mobility support

How to care for an older relative overnight?

Caring for a family member during the night can feel overwhelming, but there are plenty of ways you can make them safer and more comfortable at home. These include:

  • Installing motion sensor lights for their bedroom, bathroom, and hallways
  • Ensuring all paths, especially the path to the toilet, are clear and clutter-free
  • Checking the house is securely locked
  • Placing a drink beside their bed for hydration during the night
  • Monitoring their caffeine intake in the afternoon and evening, as this can affect quality of sleep
  • Ensuring they receive enough fresh air and exercise during the day
  • Providing adult incontinence products to protect skin and bedding.

Meet our in-house Clinical Lead

Our complex care services are guided by in-house Clinical Lead, Sabah Shah, who specialises in complex care. By working closely alongside care managers and carers, Sabah ensures loved ones receive the best care possible.

Types of live-in overnight care available

  • Live in care: a carer will move into the home to provide dedicated sleeping night care.
  • Respite care: short-term live in care from as little as two weeks, giving family carers the opportunity to rest and recharge.
  • Short-term and intermediate care: care arranged within 48 hours for individuals who need temporary or transitional overnight support.
  • Complex care: specialist care for conditions including dementia, Parkinson’s, and cancer.
  • End-of-life care: compassionate, respectful care focused on comfort, dignity, and personal wishes during the night.
  • Emergency care: quickly arranged care, when urgent overnight support is needed.

What is the cost of overnight care?

The cost of overnight care at home is typically in line with, and sometimes less than, what you would pay for residential care, with the added peace of mind that comes with receiving one-to-one tailored care which isn’t possible in a care home setting.
