Bed Rails For The Elderly | The Good Care Group

Bed transfer support rails for the older generation

Bed transfer support rails are a safety measure for people with mobility or frailty concerns. As we age, everyday tasks like getting in and out of bed often become more challenging. Bed rails can promote independence by providing support and stability when shifting positions or getting in and out of bed.

Bed transfer support rails should not be confused with full length bed rails; these are assessed and provided by your occupational therapist or district nurse and should not be purchased privately without assessment.

Care needs to be taken to reduce the risk of entrapment. Always position the rail a pillow length from the bedhead to reduce the risk of the individual trapping their head in the space. If the individual is particularly restless or has involuntary movements of their limbs care should be taken in the choice of bed rail to reduce the risk of limbs getting trapped between the bars.
