What is stroke recovery care at home?

While the effects of a stroke can be life-changing, we’ve seen how home care can make a real difference to recovery. From being close to the community you love, to making your own choices every day, we provide highly-personalised, nurse-led care at home. So you can stay in the place you love, while receiving the care you need.

One of our care managers will take the time to get to know your needs and wishes, creating a care plan that’s built around you. Then, similar to our live in care service, a highly-skilled carer will move into the home to provide full-time stroke recovery support.

What is a stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off or interrupted, resulting in a lack of oxygen that affects how the body functions. The effects of a stroke depend on which part of the brain is injured and the extent of the damage.

As a stroke is a medical emergency, it’s critical to spot the warning signs in yourself or someone else. Symptoms of a stroke include:

  • Sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, including legs, hands and feet
  • Difficulty finding words or speaking in clear sentences
  • Sudden blurred vision or loss of sight in one or both eyes
  • Sudden memory loss, confusion, dizziness or a sudden fall
  • A sudden and severe headache

According to the Stroke Association, a stroke occurs every five minutes in the UK, and 100,000 people have strokes each year.

Why choose The Good Care Group?

With award-winning stroke care, you can maintain your independence and quality of life in the place you love most.

In-house carer training

All of our carers complete a training programme developed by in-house clinicians before being assigned to a placement. Plus, they’ll receive additional enhanced training for complex care needs.

Fully managed service

We are not a care agency. We directly employ, train, and supervise all of our carers. That means you’ll receive consistent, reliable support, from carers we know and trust.

Dementia care experts

Our in-house experts, including Clinical Lead Sabah Shah and Dementia Champion Nichola Proctor, support our care teams to deliver compassionate dementia care at every stage of the condition.

Award-winning care

We’ve won more awards than any other home care provider for our service, training and culture. Including a Home Care Award, and a National Dementia Care Award.

What does stroke care include?

Our stroke care service is designed to be highly-personalised and tailored to your needs. To ensure this is the case, we’ll conduct a free care consultation before care starts to develop a detailed care plan, which can include various types of support to help you during your recovery, such as:

  • Medication management
  • Personal care
  • Medical care overseen by experienced clinicians
  • Help around the home
  • Pet care
  • Support with social activities
  • Companionship

Meet our in-house Clinical Lead

Our complex care services are guided by in-house Clinical Lead, Sabah Shah, who specialises in complex care. By working closely alongside care managers and carers, Sabah ensures loved ones receive the best care possible.

What are the three types of stroke?

Ischaemic stroke: This is caused by a blockage cutting off the blood supply to the brain and is the most common type of stroke.

Haemorrhagic stroke: A Haemorrhagic stroke is caused by bleeding in or around the brain and can have catastrophic consequences.

Transient ischaemic attack (TIA): a TIA is also referred to as a mini stroke. It is the same as other strokes, except the symptoms only last for a short amount of time. This is because it is only a temporary blockage to the blood getting to the brain.

What is the cost of stroke care?

While stroke care typically carries a higher cost of care compared to other home care services, live-in care can offer better value than traditional hourly care services. This is because other domiciliary care providers can include “extra” charges that can exceed the price of a fully-personalised live-in service.

Our stroke recovery care cost is typically in line with – and sometimes more cost-effective than – residential home care. We provide a level of dedicated, one-to-one attention that residential care simply cannot replicate, ensuring you remain safe and comfortable in the home you love.
