Starting a professional career in care

If you have cared for a family member or friend you will know first hand the difference great care can make and how you can enhance someone’s quality of life through the care that you provide. You will understand that it’s not about simply completing ‘tasks’ for someone, it’s about promoting independence with kindness, compassion and empathy. It’s about building relationships, knowing the person you are supporting and tailoring your care to meet their needs.

We recognise the valuable experience that people gain through caring for family and friends and want to support more Carers to enjoy a rewarding career in a professional care setting.

That’s why we have launched an enhanced induction training for Carers looking for a professional care role. Our ‘Step into Care’ programme is an extension of our current Carer induction and will enable Carers joining us with personal experience, or less than 6 months’ professional care experience, to build upon their skills and develop the knowledge they need to provide the very best care to our clients.

Olga joined our team four years ago with personal experience of caring for a family member. She was working as a Recruitment Consultant before deciding to retrain as a Professional Carer. “I used to care for my grandmother during her last years. I was preparing meals, administering medications, helping with personal care and most importantly keeping her company.” Olga chose live-in care as she believed she could form a much better relationship with one person only, especially supporting them to stay in their own home.

I thought we could build a proper connection and I can become familiar with my client’s needs, rather than helping many individuals in care homes where I’d need to divide my time and energy between many people. The work-life balance was another factor that made me choose live-in care over other types of care work. What I enjoy most is making a difference to someone’s life. I can say that this job is the most rewarding one I’ve ever had. It gives me a sense of achievement and fulfilment and I simply can’t imagine doing anything else now. There is always room for more improvement though and I know if I wish to develop any further, I will have all the resources, encouragement and support from the company.”

If you’re thinking about starting a career in live-in care I would say don’t be afraid to go for it. If you feel this is your calling, if you are naturally kind, caring and empathetic – this is the job for you! Also, don’t be shy to ask for support, there are some wonderful people through all levels of seniority and across all different departments. The Good Care Group is definitely the best company I’ve ever worked for.”

We understand changing roles can be daunting, that’s why our recruiters are here to guide you through the application process.  Olga reflects on her recruitment journey “My recruiter was very professional, approachable and helpful. At the same time she was really kind and put me at ease, she made the whole process as relaxed and enjoyable as possible. Approaching The Good Care Group and applying for work as a live-in carer was really simple. The training covered the essential skills and knowledge one needs to provide care, along with the Care Certificate. I learnt how to support someone at home, including safe use of hoists, personal care, Dementia care and medication administration, to name a few. The training was extensive enough and the trainers were amazing, professional and with great knowledge, but at the same time really kind and approachable.

If you have less than 6 months’ professional care experience, or you have cared for a family member or friend, including supporting with personal care, we’d love to speak with you. Call our team on 0203 728 7570 or start your application here.
