Live-in care is an alternative to other care solutions such as care homes, for those who have long term health needs. To many older people, or those with life-limiting conditions, there’s nowhere better to live than the comfort of their own home and that is what live-in care allows them to enjoy.
Professional Carer Philip has been working with The Good Care Group since early 2019 and has been supporting his client working 2 weeks on with 2 weeks off. Live-in care enables our Professional Carers, like Philip, to have the time to care and build meaningful relationships with their clients, really enhancing the care and support they are able to provide. Philip shares his story with us below:
“I enjoy making a difference and being able to care for and support my client in his own home, which is his wish. I started my placement at a very difficult time for my client as he had recently lost his lifelong friend and wife. I supported him at her funeral and felt privileged to be there for him and to be a shoulder to cry on if he needed me. We both keep busy, chatting, eating, playing dominoes and we also do crosswords most mornings. I put a photograph of his late wife at the side of his chair and he often chats with her and if there is something we are watching on tv that he knows she would enjoy, he turns her photo towards the tv, so it is like she is there watching with us.
It’s important to me to get to know my client and their past history in order to provide the best care possible. As a professional live-in-carer I work one-on-one with my client and therefore get to know them well. It helps me to provide my client with tailored support to meet their emotional needs as well as their physical care needs. I discovered that in 1942 my client worked on a ship with the Merchant Navy. I managed to track down video footage and photos of the ship he worked on. He likes to look through them and share stories from his time aboard the ship. It’s things like this that really make the difference for me. Live-in care enables me to have the time to care for my client. My motto has always been to put myself in my client’s position and to care for them how I would like to be cared for.”
Philip’s Care Manager Hayley says “Philip is so passionate, he is a pleasure to work with, he shows genuine care for his client and the relationship and connection they have is amazing. He goes above and beyond to enhance his client’s quality of life, he brings the garden in to his client and they plant and pot beautiful plants for the garden. They enjoy music together, foot spa pampering sessions and love watching films and programmes. Every day they play dominos and laugh with one another when Philips’ client, the dominos champion, says after another defeat “You really haven’t got the hang of this yet have you Philip!”
