Couples Care – Mr and Mrs L

Mr and Mrs L had been in receipt of domiciliary care for slightly over a year before turning to live-in care. At the Good Care Group we want people to have an enriched life and this is very much at the heart of our core values and beliefs that we instill into our professional live-in carers at their induction and through their supervisions.

The Good Care Group started providing live-in care for Mr and Mrs L in April 2020 during the first lockdown. Both clients had dementia and with the restrictive social time, it was especially important to suitably match the carers. Initially a female care team was put in place as this was the preferred choice of the family. However, Mr L could at times display distressed behaviours and it became obvious through incident reporting and recording that the team needed to be reevaluated. A male team was introduced and The Good Care Group also involved the mental health team. With their involvement and a team change, the balance of personalities evened and the behaviour that challenged has diminished.

Mr and Mr L now enjoy daily walks and love to go out in the garden. One of the professional carers supports Mr L to look at the night skies to see the different star constellations. Mr L also likes to play scrabble and is very hard to beat. Mrs L likes to be involved in the household chores, folding the laundry and drying dishes. Mrs L also likes to have her hair washed and blow dried by our professional carer.

They now have a fulfilled life. With some planned activities and some spontaneous ones, they are going further afield now that lockdown restrictions are lifted, enjoying walks in local botanical gardens.

There are many benefits to live-in care and some of the benefits are specific to couples care. For example, the cost of care; if a couple moves into a care home, the cost of care is typically double the price of receiving high quality, live-in care at home. With live-in care there is only one weekly fee for the care team, with a small supplement for couples care depending on needs, so it is a very cost-effective alternative to moving into a care home for couples.
