A Carer’s Story – Flowers to brighten your day

Arlene has been a carer for 7 years and was introduced to live-in care by a friend. Arlene really enjoys her role as a live-in carer as it gives her the opportunity to make a positive difference to her clients and their families. Here Arlene shares her post lock down story of how she was able to bring her client’s smile back.

Arlene has been looking after her current client since February, after he lost his wife on New Year’s Eve. Arlene’s client found lock down difficult as he was no longer able to enjoy his favourite past times; meeting his friends on a Friday at his local, visiting the local cafes or having friends and family visit.

Arlene noticed a decline in her client’s mood and the effect isolation had had on him. Arlene noticed a number of empty hanging baskets and flower pots in the garden, and thought that maybe a splash of colour would help lift her clients mood. Arlene requested some plants from her client’s daughter and distributed them around the property.

Arlene chose colours that her client could see; red, orange and purple. They enjoyed sitting in the Summer house, admiring the flowers and enjoying Arlene’s home made Banana bread. The injection of colour into Arlene’s clients garden returned the smile to their face and the client spoke positively about the flowers and time in the garden. A favourite pastime for Arlene’s client and his late wife.

Arlene comments,

“It’s the small things sometimes that make the difference, just makes me feel appreciated by my client and family.”
